Meet the GKCLCA leadership
Every great organization has passionate, dedicated people who lead. Some are more visible, while some are more behind-the-scenes. All are equally important to the success of an organization. Read below to "meet" some of our fantastic leaders. We can't wait to meet you as well!
PRESIDENT Kay Miller LPN, IBCLC Professional life: Kay is a nurse/IBCLC at one of our KC area hospitals. She is also an IBCLC in private practice, Heaven Sent Support LLC. Personal life: Kay has two adult kids (plus a bonus kid), a super sweet (and needy!) K9 furbaby, and two grandkittens. |
Why did you enter the world of breastfeeding?
I have always been interested in the perinatal field, and have worked with families my entire professional career. Like many IBCLCs, my experiences with my own kiddos started my interest in the lactation field specifically. My work as a nurse and doula showed me the desperate need for breastfeeding support for families, so I decided to focus my career in breastfeeding...and definitely found my niche!
What is your favorite thing to do in the KC area?
I love supporting/shopping local businesses, visiting local landmarks, and seeing the city decked out for Christmas. I love our city so much that I even have a KC themed living room!
What is your favorite KC area restaurant?
Oh, the choices are too many--we are a foodie city for sure! I'm always up for visiting local restaurants. Since KC is known for its BBQ--my favorites are Arthur Bryant's and Jack Stack. My favorite local coffee is the Roasterie.
When not supporting breastfeeding families, where would we see you?
Wine tasting, relaxing on my patio, walking my furbaby, reading, gardening, church activities, working on various personal and professional studies.

I am a total tea snob--only quality, loose leaf teas allowed! I love the scent of Play-Doh. I hoard office supplies--especially Post-it Notes.

Why did you enter the world of breastfeeding?
Breastfeeding was a really important goal for me personally. I had two miscarriages before I got a "sticky baby," and then when I finally made it to the second trimester with my first, I got a DVT the length of almost my entire leg. I was desperate for breastfeeding to go well so I could learn to trust my body again, but it ended up being difficult. I know how healing it can be when the breastfeeding relationship works out the way you want it to after persevering through many obstacles. I'm deeply committed to helping my patients meet their goals!
What is your favorite thing to do in the KC area?
Peruse our local business off of the Historic Downtown Liberty Square. It's such a hidden gem, and we are lucky enough to be within walking distance.
What is your favorite KC area restaurant?
Luigi's on the Liberty Square - authentic Italian with so much flavor!
When not supporting breastfeeding families, where would we see you?
Iceberg's Italian Ice and Gelato, or at the gym...because, balance!

Our house is over a hundred years old. We have a spoiled fur-bunny named Benji. I've spent almost nine years breastfeeding between my four kiddos (so far!).
